In this episode, Kribashini is talking with Jan Jamonts, a property lawyer from Canberra and a fellow BuildHer. She will share with you her story, the incredible build she accomplished, and her invaluable insights from the process.

There will always be some hairy moments during a build. Jan discusses her own experience and provides some great advice to move through these challenges and maintain a successful working relationship.

Jan divulges her sensational hot tips for building your next home. We absolutely love all of these because we talk about them in our collective all the time and they're essential when beginning any new building project.

  • [1:35]: Jan is the director of a firm called 'Elevated Legal Advisory' that focuses on residential and commercial property. She talks about the work involved in the firm and when she decided to do her own build.

  • [4:32]: Jan talks about the team she assembled, including her architect (Steven Cetrtek from Thursday Architecture) and the builder she used (D3 Projects, Richard McGrath).

  • [6:20]: Jan discusses the reasons she chose to work with Steven Cetrtek. Hot tip - Remember that you'll be working with your builder and architect for the whole build so it's so important to build a good relationship.

  • [7:29]: Jan shares her favourite moments of her house. She feels so fortunate to get to live in her house and open her front door everyday. Her house is such an amazing family home.

  • [8:20]: Jan compromised during the process and had to scale things back. She used a building approval rather than a development approval so had to ensure the correct sizes were used.

  • [10:07]: Jan divulges some more hot tips! Have a plan of attack, cement your budget, do your research, be realistic, do what you actually want to do, join an organisation like BuildHer collective that will help you during the process, and have people around you to support you.

  • [12:15]: Jan shares a hairy moment around items that weren't supplied in the agreed timeframe but advises us to always try to workshop it and adjust your expectations.
